At 23:50 on the 2nd of July 2025, a meteor probably dropped meteorites over the Scottish Highlands.
The event was picked up by many cameras in our network and was estimated to be about magnitude -12, as bright as the Full Moon. It travelled eastwards over the Ardnamurchan area, pretty much straight over Ben Nevis and then broke up at a low altitude, probably scattering rocks over the area north of Rannoch Moor, near Ben Alder.
The event was widely spotted by the public and made the BBC News, with one of our members representing us on BBC Radio Scotland, while others including myself were contacted by BBC News journalists.
The meteor was incredibly bright, with many cameras completely whited out! Fortunately those further away were able to get enough data for analysis.
We estimate that the fall would have scattered meteorites somewhere along the line shown below, depending on mass of the fragments:
